Safe Storage, Potency & Cold-Chain: Protecting Your GLP-1 Medication

Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are fragile peptides. Heat, freezing, or improper storage can quietly damage potency before you ever inject.

Safe Storage, Potency & Cold-Chain: Protecting Your GLP-1 Medication

GLP-1 medications, Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, and their compounded microdose forms, are peptides. And peptides are fragile. Heat, freezing, or improper storage can damage their structure long before you ever inject or use them. When that happens, patients often blame themselves for "not losing weight" when the truth is simpler: the medication wasn't potent.

Protecting your medication's potency is one of the most overlooked parts of GLP-1 therapy, and one of the easiest to get right once you know how.

Why Peptides Are So Sensitive

Peptides are chains of amino acids folded into a precise shape. That shape is what lets them bind to receptors and do their job. Temperature swings, light exposure, and agitation can cause the peptide to unfold or break down, a process called degradation. A degraded peptide may look identical in the vial, but it no longer works the way it should.

How to Store Your GLP-1 Medication

  • Refrigerate it. Keep your compounded GLP-1 in the refrigerator, typically between 36–46°F (2–8°C), unless your pharmacy label says otherwise.
  • Never freeze it. Freezing permanently damages the peptide. If your medication has frozen, do not use it, contact your care team.
  • Keep it out of direct light and heat. Store it away from the freezer wall, the door shelf, sunlight, and heat sources.
  • Don't shake it. Roll or swirl gently if needed; vigorous shaking can stress the peptide.
  • Mind the beyond-use date. Compounded medications carry a limited stability window, use within the timeframe on your label.

Traveling with Your Medication

Carry your medication in an insulated cooler with an ice pack (not touching the vial directly). Keep it in your carry-on rather than a hot car or checked luggage, and refrigerate it as soon as you arrive.

Signs Your Medication May Have Been Compromised

When in doubt, don't guess, message your physician through the patient portal before using it.

  • It was left at room temperature or in heat for an extended period
  • It froze, or arrived frozen
  • The solution looks cloudy, discolored, or has particles (it should be clear)
  • It's past its beyond-use date

Why Cold-Chain Delivery Matters

A prescription is only as good as its handling from the lab to your doorstep. That's why Eleva MD partners exclusively with state-licensed 503A compounding pharmacies and ships temperature-sensitive medications in validated cold-chain packaging, insulated coolers with cold packs designed to hold safe temperatures in transit. Your medication arrives at full strength.

The Bottom Line

If your GLP-1 therapy ever feels like it "stopped working," potency, not willpower, may be the hidden variable. Store your medication cold, keep it out of heat and light, never freeze it, and lean on your care team whenever something looks off.
